Redfern Station Upgrade

Ensuring accessibility at one of Sydney’s busiest train stations required careful planning – especially when construction had to happen at night, near residential buildings. Discover how EMM’s NoiseCheck™ tool helped streamline noise assessments, optimise mitigation strategies and keep the project moving.

Novo Rail Alliance | Redfern, Sydney

Project overview
The Redfern Station Upgrade project was a significant NSW Government initiative under the Transport Access Program to enhance accessibility and connectivity at one of Sydney’s busiest train stations. The project delivered an 85-metre-long southern concourse with a six-metre-wide walkway, six new stairs and lifts providing improved access to platforms 1 through 10. Two new station entrances at Marian Street and Little Eveleigh Street were introduced, enhancing connectivity to South Eveleigh, Carriageworks
and the University of Sydney.

A key challenge for the project was the need to undertake much of the construction under track possession on weekends and during evening and night periods where noise sensitivity within the surrounding community was greatest.
Our involvement
EMM’s industry-leading noise and vibration prediction tool, NoiseCheck™, was instrumental in managing one of the project’s most complex challenges – accurately assessing and mitigating out-of-hours construction noise in a dense urban setting. Its use allowed Novo Rail to confidently meet the expectations of the project’s Acoustic Advisor, the proponent and regulators.
Our value
  • With multi-storey residential buildings in all directions, accurately predicting noise impacts across high-rise facades was a significant challenge. Conventional methods often led to overly conservative estimates, resulting in unnecessary mitigation costs. By leveraging NoiseCheck’s advanced modelling capabilities, EMM’s solution provided more precise assessments, allowing Novo Rail to implement targeted, cost-effective noise management strategies while ensuring compliance and minimising community disruption.

  •
  • NoiseCheck was set-up to allow Novo Rail to predict noise levels vertically up high-rise apartment buildings across all facades. This allowed them to better predict noise impacts on local residents based on the type and location of construction activity and implement appropriate mitigation measures.

Noisecheck

NoiseCheck™ provided an intelligent, real-time solution to predict noise impacts, refine mitigation strategies and ensure compliance. This solution minimised project disruptions and gave the project team full oversight of noise impacts at all times.
